What Is an HS Code and How to Find Yours

An HS code (Harmonized System code) is an internationally standardised number used to classify traded goods. Customs authorities everywhere use it to determine duties, taxes and any restrictions on a product.
How the Harmonized System works
The Harmonized System is maintained by the World Customs Organization. The first six digits are common worldwide, and countries add further digits for national tariff detail (for example, India uses an 8-digit ITC-HS code).
Why the right code matters
- It determines the duty and tax rate applied to your goods.
- It controls whether licences, restrictions or preferences apply.
- An incorrect code can cause customs queries, delays and penalties.
