Air Cargo ULDs: Unit Load Devices Explained

A Unit Load Device (ULD) is the container or pallet used to consolidate air cargo into a single unit for loading onto an aircraft. ULDs make loading faster, safer and more efficient.
What a ULD is
ULDs are specially shaped containers and pallets designed to fit the curved holds of aircraft. Cargo is built up onto a ULD, which is then loaded as one unit, speeding up handling and protecting the goods.
Main types
- Containers: enclosed units, often contoured to the aircraft hold.
- Pallets with nets: flat bases on which cargo is stacked and secured.
- Specialised ULDs: for temperature-controlled or specific cargo.
